When it comes to the topic of eternal life, there are many questions that pop into our minds. Questions like, “how do we receive it?”, “do we keep it forever?”, “can it be taken away?”, etc.
My goal with this post is to answer some of these questions about eternal life and a few others. There are obviously tons of questions about this topic but, we can dig further into this in other posts.
1. Eternal Life with God starts when you accept Jesus as your Savior
When you believe in and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior you immediately become an eternal being. When a believer dies a physical death, they continue to live in the spiritual realm.
Also, when Jesus returns to Earth in his second coming, all believers will receive their brand new resurrected bodies, which will have the same abilities that Jesus has in his resurrected body.
The moment you accept Jesus and believe in him, the bible says you become a new type of creation entirely:
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)
While your outward appearance remains the same, it is on the inside that you become brand new. Your body becomes a new habitation for the Holy Spirit.
So how exactly does someone live out this new life after believing in Jesus? The bible has an answer for that too!
And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him.Colossians 2:6-7 (NLT)
Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
When you decide to believe in and accept Jesus, that is just the first step in your brand new life. In order to grow in your faith, you need to let him rule over your life by putting him first above all else.
Then, you become a student of the Lord by studying his teachings (the bible) and putting his lessons into practice in your own life.
Finally, you allow the Holy Spirit that now dwells in you to guide you in your every day life. The Holy Spirit will convict you of things that you’re doing wrong and will speak to your mind and heart about things to say and do.
I will dig into each of those 3 things in a future blog post, but for now that should help to give you a basic understanding of what you should expect in your new eternal life.
2. When you live to please the Holy Spirit, you reap eternal life
Your life as a believer will consist of many ups and downs. The decisions you make in your life as a believer will have consequences both good and bad.
The bible makes it very clear in the above verse that what you sow is what you will reap. Just as you cannot reap apples when you plant seeds for oranges, you cannot reap blessings when you plant gossip, envy, hatred, lies or any other sin.
However, if you decide to put away your own selfish desires so that you only care about the desires of God, your life will reflect that. God will ensure that you will be blessed in this life as well as in eternity.
If you’re a believer, and you’re constantly facing trouble, you’ll want to analyze what kind of seeds your sowing into your life.
While it’s true things happen in our lives that are outside of our control, just for the simple fact we live in a fallen world, we still, no matter what, have the ability to fulfill the desires of the Spirit in our lives.
3. Whoever rejects Jesus remains an enemy of God
How do you know you HAVE eternal life? It’s very simple, the bible verse above says that you simply believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s it.
There is nothing that you can do yourself that will lead to eternal life. The only way is through believing in Jesus Christ. It is through believing in Jesus, and believing in what the bible says about him, that you are saved.
However, faith in Jesus alone isn’t good enough either. Though it may sound contradictory, it’s really not. While I will expound on this a lot further in a future blog post, I’ll talk briefly about it now.
So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.James 2:17 (NLT)
Simply acknowledging that Jesus exists isn’t what’s going to save you. Doing good deeds in his name will not save you. Serving and obeying God will not save you.
The fact of the matter is this, performing good deeds, serving and obeying God are the direct results of someone who truly believes in Jesus with all of their heart.
A true believer performs these good acts simply because it flows out of them naturally!
That statement cannot be made anymore clear. Good deeds/works cannot save you. Faith and works both require one another for salvation to be legitimate.
Finally, when it comes to a non-believer, they have until their final breath to believe in and accept the Lord Jesus as their savior. After that, there is nothing else God can do for them.
4. You must be willing to risk it all to follow Jesus and inherit eternal life
In this passage, Jesus is explaining to his disciples that if they lose something that they hold valuable in this life due to following him, that God will repay them in even greater value in this life, along with eternal life.
However, I would like to share with you what is said in Mark 10:30:
will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.Mark 10:30 (NLT)
The above verse is almost a mirror image of the one in Matthew with one very important difference. That difference is the piece that says, “along with persecution“.
What Jesus wanted his disciples to understand was that yes, God will repay you tremendously for what you gave up for him, but that also will come at a price.
The world hated and still very much hates Jesus and his followers. So the rewards that God blesses his believers with will also make them targets by hateful unbelievers.
He also wanted to make sure his disciples understood this because, he wanted them to know that following him for selfish reasons will put them in very uncomfortable situations.
So, if someone wants to follow Jesus just so that they can get something out of him will be in for a very rude awakening sooner or later.
5. Accepting Jesus results in God’s abundant kindness (Grace)
To better understand this verse, let’s take a look at the preceding passage:
God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.Romans 5:20 (NLT)
If you’ve ever tried to obey the laws of God out of your own strength and ability, then you know how worthless that is. Without God’s grace, we could never achieve holiness.
He requires that we be holy since he is holy, but as humans that is literally impossible. Whether we sin in thoughts or through physical deeds, we cannot help but sin.
When someone comes to Jesus and accepts him as their Lord and savior, it is the work that he did on the cross that saved them and made them holy from that moment going forward.
So if you’re a believer and you end up falling into sin, don’t let it weigh you down with guilt. There is no need for you to feel unworthy because, the grace of God, his kindness, is what makes you holy.
You simply confess your sin to the Lord and carry on. I do want to make a note here and say that you should analyze how you fell into this sin so that you know how to avoid falling back into it again in the future.
This is not to say that you will never commit the same sin again, but the Lord sees your heart and can see that you are fighting to do his will instead of your own, and he will strengthen you in the Spirit to prevail.
6. You must not continue in activities or relationships that are sinful
This verse may sound like Jesus is advocating self-harm, but I think it’s pretty obvious what he’s alluding to here.
Anything that is causing us to stumble in our walk with Christ needs to be eliminated. If there are activities that you partake in and it leads you to sin, then that’s a good indication that this activity needs to go.
This also includes people in your lives that have a negative influence over your life. The activities that you participate in with this individuals will either lead you closer to Christ or further away.
Going to the club, bar or other places that don’t glorify Christ in any way will almost always lead you into sin and it doesn’t send a good message to those who you’ve told that you’re a Christian.
Doing the same things that they do diminishes the value of following Christ and they’ll see no difference and no point in following Jesus.
Hell is a very real place and Jesus warns his disciples here just how serious we are to take sin and it’s eternal consequences.
7. You will still suffer in this life, but Satan can’t touch your soul or steal your eternal life
A true born-again believer will never lose their salvation. Period. Someone masquerading as a born-again believer can’t lose their salvation either because, it’s impossible to lose something that you’ve never actually had.
If you truly believe in him you’re saved. Your life will reflect that by the natural outpouring of love and good deeds because you’re grateful for God’s grace and mercy.
Someone who purposely continues to sin day and night with zero ounce of remorse or conviction is not saved. You cannot claim to believe in Jesus and then go out on a murdering spree because you think that’s how salvation works.
It doesn’t work that way. People have made this subject more complicated than it really needs to be.
For those of you who are struggling with believing that Jesus is God can put that doubt to rest with the above verse.
Here, Jesus clearly states here that he is also God. While he and the Father are not the same person, they are one in both essence and in nature.
Today’s post has been a tremendous blessing for me and I pray that it also has blessed you. I hope that this post helped to develop a better understanding of eternal life for you.
