Prayer: The Ultimate Guide To Getting Yours Answered

Sharing is caring!

Introduction

Praying is one of the biggest acts of faith. Especially if you’re recently born-again, prayer can feel kind of strange. Sometimes it can feel like that because you think prayer is some sort of one-way conversation.

Here you are, speaking to someone who you can’t see or hear. You may even start to question your own sanity. However, I can assure you that prayer is definitely not a one-way conversation.

Prayer can really start to feel challenging when things seem to not be going according to plan. You pray and pray about a certain situation, only to see that what you prayed for didn’t get answered.

Does that mean God isn’t real? Are you too notorious of a sinner that God just refuses to answer your prayers?

While I obviously don’t have all of the answers, because nobody does; what I do have is scripture. The bible actually lays out what the conditions for answered prayer are.

To answer the 2 questions from above; yes, God is most definitely real and no, you’re not too notorious of a sinner, Satan holds that title.

So today I want to share with you what I found in the bible regarding answered prayer, and I hope it becomes a blessing in your life as well.

Condition #1: Have the faith of God

That is what the Scriptures mean when God told him, “I have made you the father of many nations.” This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.

Romans 4:17 | NLT

God demonstrated what faith is when he spoke creation into existence. Abraham also demonstrated that same faith by completely trusting and believing in God when he was told that his seed would inherit the Promised Land.

By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.

Hebrews 11:3 | NLT

This is a powerful verse because it clearly explains it is by faith that we believe that God created all of existence from nothing. That’s what makes him so awesome. By being the Creator, he did not need any preexisting material to create; he simply created the needed material in order to form all of existence.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Galatians 5:22-23 | NLT

Here is an awesome verse that tells you exactly how to get this amazing faith. It clearly states that it is the Holy Spirit which instills that Godly faith into us, along with many other fruits. It’s important to understand that without the Holy Spirit in us it is impossible to develop such faith.

Condition #2: Pray to God with boldness

I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.

Mark 11:23-24 | NLT

In this verse Jesus is making it plain as day; whatever you’re praying for, if you truly believe that it will happen, have zero doubt in your heart, and believe that you have already received it, then he promises that it will be yours.

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

Matthew 17:20 | NLT

Jesus didn’t sugarcoat anything. He would drop truth-bombs like this all of the time. The simple reason for unanswered prayer is unbelief. You can call it “lack of faith”, but to lack in faith means you don’t fully believe that God can keep his promises.

But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!

John 15:7 | NLT

There are 2 conditions for answered prayer in this verse; the first being that the one doing the praying must be in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The second is that the teachings of Jesus need to be a part of the believers life.

Those who truly follow Jesus don’t just “read” his teachings, they live it. They allow his teachings to transform their lives. By doing so, their minds will be more aligned to the mind of Christ, and as a result, their prayers will be more in line with the Kingdom of God, which in turn results in prayers being answered.

Condition #3: Your prayers must be limitless

What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”

Mark 9:23 | NLT

It all comes down to the level of faith of the one doing the praying. The issue with unanswered prayer is never on God’s end. He never breaks his promises, therefore it is up to the individual to self examine their walk with Christ to see if there’s anything that is getting in the way of their prayers getting answered.

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

James 5:16 | NLT

Sin definitely plays a huge part in unanswered prayer. Which is why it’s very important to forgive and seek forgiveness in order restore your spiritual health.

This verse describes how there’s great power in the prayer of a believer who is righteous in the eyes of God. Which means that the opposite is also true, in that the prayers of an unrighteous person has lesser power and lacks results.

The verses from the previous section about moving mountains also applies to this section as well. Part of limitless prayers is truly believing in the seemingly impossible. However, that is a level of faith that we need to gradually build towards.

The more trust that you build with God, the mightier your prayers will become.

Condition #4: Remove all doubt when praying

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.

Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

James 1:5-8 | NLT

The biggest key to having your prayers answered is to remove all doubt from your mind. Just simply believe that what you’re asking for is not impossible for God to do, because (here’s a secret…) it’s not.

If you’re praying for God to give you wisdom, the bible says he will give it to you. However, when you’re praying to the Father in the name of his son Jesus, you cannot have any doubt in your heart and mind that God will give you the wisdom you’re asking for.

Those who ask and then waiver back and forth between believing and not believing simply do not truly believe. The bible makes it explicitly clear that if someone doubts God after asking him for something, they shouldn’t expect to receive anything from him.

Those who doubt don’t truly believe that God can do what they’re asking, and don’t have the required faith in God to receive what it is they’re asking for. They’re still holding onto the ways of this world which is preventing them from having complete faith in God.

Condition #5: Believe that you’ll receive

Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

“You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

Matthew 7:7-11 | NLT

If you’re a believer, then this should settle any doubt in your mind as to whether God answers prayers. Here Jesus is telling you that he is wanting to give you what you’re asking. The only valid reason to not receiving what you’ve prayed for is unbelief. It’s really that simple.

Now, I just want to make sure I make one point abundantly clear; if you’re praying for things that do not align with the will of God, then don’t expect that prayer to receive an answer.

This is why I pointed out earlier that when you have the teachings of Christ alive inside of you, and you allow them to transform your mind, you will no longer crave the things of this world as you once did.

Those who live in Christ and Christ lives in them do not care about big, giant houses, fancy cars, expensive clothes, a luxurious life, etc. Do you know why? It’s because they come to a realization that this world isn’t their home.

Their true home is eternity in Heaven with God. So nothing in this world can ever satisfy them because there’s no competition.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 | NLT

The bible is chock-full of proof that God rewards those who believe and have total faith in him. This verse makes it known that without faith there’s no way to please God. You want to have your prayers answered? First you need to believe that God exists 100%. There’s no way around it.

You can’t pray about something and say, “I’ll believe in God if this prayer actually comes true”. It just doesn’t work that way. You either fully believe or you don’t. There’s no 50/50 when it comes to a relationship with Christ.

You must decide in your heart, whether you truly believe that he exists or not. Once you do, and you decide that he truly does exist, and that he does reward those who love and seek him, then you’ll start to experience the supernatural power of God in your life.

This is why studying the bible is so important. You can’t believe in something or someone that you know nothing about. That’s impossible. However, whether you truly believe in him 100% or not, just ask the Holy Spirit to help you believe and understand when reading his word.

We all start from ground zero. Nobody walking this planet is born with rock solid faith. It’s something that is built from the ground, up. Little by little, inch by inch, God will help you to build that solid foundation of faith as long as you’re willing to put in the work.

Condition #6: Believe that it’s already yours

I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.

Mark 11:24 | NLT

Lots of people get super excited when they read this verse. The reason for their excitement is because they think that they can literally ask for whatever they want. However, if you’ve been reading all the way up to this point, then you know where I’m going with this.

When Jesus mentioned the word “anything”, he’s speaking about anything according to the will of God. So that big fancy yacht, huge mansion, designer clothes, extravagant vacations, etc. are not part of his will.

I refer to such things as “the will of man”. The will of man is full of self-centered desires. The will of God is God-centered. God lists many things in the bible that are his will. If you’re praying for any of those things, and you’re living a lifestyle that pleases him, then you can rest assure that those prayers will be answered.

The teachings of Jesus transforms your mind and lifestyle to that which is fully focused and centered on him. Does that mean that you have to neglect your loved ones so that you can please God? Of course not. He even mentions in his word how we are supposed to provide for our loved ones, care for them, love them and guide them.

And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.

1 John 5:14-15 | NLT

How do you get God to hear whatever you’re asking for? It’s simple, ask for things that pleases him. How do we know what pleases him? By reading and studying his word. A key part of this verse is at the very beginning…”And we are confident…”.

Being “confident” is the same as saying “we have faith” in God. When you start to grow in your faith you’ll become more confident that God is who he claims to be in his word.

You’ll become more confident in your prayer life because you’ll realize that he truly does hear you when you speak, and truly does answer prayer.

Many of us believers can be stubborn and not want to admit that our faith isn’t as rock solid as we like to project to others around us. The bible makes it abundantly clear that you’ll know who truly believes by seeing the fruit that they produce in their life.

If someone claims to be a believer, yet lives a very unfruitful life, then something beneath the shallow surface is going on. It either involves a sinful life that they’re trying to keep hidden from man, or they suffer from doubt and unbelief.

Condition #7: Speak with authority when praying

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

Matthew 17:20 | NLT

I know I shared this verse earlier, but it’s an important verse to help drive home the point that I’m trying to make here; which is when praying, you’ll want to speak with confidence, boldness and authority.

As a believer in Jesus Christ, you are a child of the Most High God, which puts you in a very privileged position not only in this life, but also in eternity.

In this bible verse, Jesus is instructing you in how to pray with authority. Best of all, you don’t need to be someone who’s been a believer for decades. All you need is faith as small as mustard seed.

How? Well, first of all it’s important to understand that you’re not the one with the power here. It’s all God. However, if you’re someone that’s living a life that’s pleasing to God, you truly believe that he exists and are praying according to his will, then God demonstrates his awesome power through you.

Condition #8: Believe that what you’re asking God for is his will

But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!

John 15:7 | NLT

I believe that up to this very point in this article, it’s pretty well known that when we allow ourselves to get as close to Jesus as possible in our relationship with him, the more in tune we become with his mind.

It’s impossible to know what God likes and dislikes if we make zero effort in getting to know him. You get to know him by studying his teachings and putting those teachings into practice in your own life.

Faith in Jesus Christ along with following him is a very uncomplicated process. Jesus said all we need is child-like faith to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Man is the one who makes it complicated by inventing countless religions with even more countless religious practices to try and “appease” God, all the while still living a sinful life.

Outside of total faith and belief in Christ, nothing on this earth can save you from spending eternity in hell. That is a whole topic for a different post, but just know that outside of Jesus there is no salvation, period.

So, if you’re in tune with Christ, you’ll also be in tune with his mind and will. Therefore, naturally your prayers will be in total alignment with his will. When your prayers are in alignment with his will, your prayers get answered, it really is that simple.

Condition #9: Don’t question God’s will

For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.

Psalms 84:11 | NLT

The will of God is full of nothing but good things. This verse states that God will not withhold anything good from his children who live a lifestyle that pleases him. That lifestyle involves total faith in him and following his teachings.

In a previous verse, God asks us if our own children ask us for fish, would we give them a snake instead? The obvious answer is no. Well, with God, the obvious answer of giving us something we did not ask for is no.

That alone should help put your mind at ease when it comes to wondering about having your prayers answered. But again, it totally depends on if your personal relationship with Jesus Christ is genuine.

Nobody is perfect. You will always end up doing something that grieves the Holy Spirit no matter how hard you try. The key thing to remember is to stay focused on Christ.

He already knows what you’re going to say and do before you even do it. If you make a mistake, confess it to him and move on. Do not let the devil keep you feeling guilty. Listen to the voice of Christ instead of the voice of Satan.

By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.

And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

2 Peter 1:3-4 | NLT

This verse ties everything that we have learned together up to this point perfectly. By growing in your personal relationship with Christ, you start to become more aware of his will. As I mentioned earlier, his will is full of nothing but good things.

Those good things are his promises that are spread all throughout his word. These promises are what will pull you away from the terrible grip of this world and into the amazing arms of Christ.

By the power of the Holy Spirit, you will be able to draw closer to Christ, and the closer you get to Christ the more you become like him.

The more you become more like Christ, the bigger of an impact you will have on the lives of those around you. As you read the Gospels, you will quickly realize that during his ministry, Jesus did not live a quiet life.

Instead he, along with his small group of followers, flipped the world upside down. In the bible, Jesus said that with the power of the Holy Spirit, the very same Holy Spirit that lived inside of him, we would be able to do what he did plus more.

That does not mean we will be greater than the Creator himself. It simply means that through his power, we would be able to impact the world as he did but on a larger scale.

Just knowing this little piece alone should entice you enough to want to let go of the desires of this world and do everything you can to drawer closer to Christ.

Condition #10: Live a holy life

But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.”

Mark 11:25 | NLT

Jesus is pretty straightforward in his message here in this verse. One of the basic requirements of getting your prayers answered is to have a forgiving spirit within you.

You cannot expect God to answer your prayers if you refuse to forgive anyone who has wronged you. This kind of attitude is known to block the blessings of God into one’s life.

Think of it this way, before someone accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they lived a life that was in rebellion to God. They did things that grieved God on a daily basis, whether they knew it or not. God obviously wasn’t caught off guard by their behavior, but it nonetheless grieved him deeply.

During all of that, God still loved them and yearned to call them his son/daughter. You want to know the most loving thing of all this? Jesus died for this very same person over 2,000 years ago so that they can be redeemed and have the opportunity to experience eternal life with him.

And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him. And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us.

1 John 3:22-23

So how does one receive from God whatever it is that they’re praying for? Obedience and holiness. You cannot obey what you don’t know. Therefore, it’s imperative that you really try to read and study the bible to have a full and clear understanding of what Jesus is asking you to do.

Holiness is simply doing the things that pleases God. What exactly are the things that please God? The answer is right there in the passage.

First, you must believe in the saving name of his Son Jesus Christ. As I mentioned earlier, there’s nothing else and no other name that will save you. Jesus Christ, the son of the living God is the only name that can give you eternal life.

What’s the other thing that pleases God? Loving one another. It’s not the superficial love that people express to others that are not in their innermost circle of influence. No, this is Godly love.

The same love that God showed you while you lived a life of sin is the same love that we are to show others around us, including our enemies.

And let’s be really honest about this, that is very, very hard to do. Especially if you are commanded to love your enemies, which we are. Why? Well, because when someone has lived a life of sin before coming to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and even though God still deeply loved them, they were an enemy of God.

Yet, while being his enemy, he loved them, deeply. While Jesus was being spit on and beaten to a bloody pulp, he still asked the Father to forgive them because they didn’t know what they were doing. He still loved them.

Conclusion

Today we learned a whole lot on what are the conditions of having our prayers answered. I want to make one point very, very clear; this whole message was a huge revelation to me before your eyes began to read through each word on this post.

I do not want to come across as someone who thinks that they have all the answers. No, instead I am excited that I don’t have all of the answers because it gives me motivation to dig into the word and prayer to find those answers.

Prayer along with reading the bible are 2 of the most important aspects of our relationship with Christ, and I just hope that this post was as much of a blessing to your life as it was to mines.

This has been a blessing. Thank you for taking the time to teach & explain in a way that is understandable especially when you broke down #10. Live a holy life: it’s imperative that you really try to read and study the bible to have a full and clear understanding of what Jesus is asking you to do.
This inspired me to open my bible tonight. Thank you.
